Treatment of Nasal Flesh

Treatment of Nasal Flesh (Concha Hypertrophy)

Nasal flesh, also known as conchae, are tissues located on the inside of the nose that clean the air taken through the nose and balance the temperature. Although the treatment of nasal concha can be done with simple operations, extraordinary situations may occur. Abnormal growth of nasal flesh and other conditions other than nasal flesh growth may complicate treatment. Since the nose is one of the most important organs in our body, any discomfort in the nose can seriously reduce the quality of life. Nasal disorders can make breathing difficult or completely prevent it. In such cases, since breathing is done through the mouth, irritation in the throat, sleep problems and other conditions that disturb the patient will arise. For this reason, diseases occurring in the nose should be taken seriously and treated as soon as possible.

What are the Symptoms of Concha Hypertrophy?

Symptoms of turbinate hypertrophy can be listed as follows;

  • Difficulty in breathing is one of the most typical symptoms of an enlarged nasal meatus, as the airways of the nose become blocked.
  • Chronic feeling of nasal congestion is among the common symptoms. Patients report that their nose is stuffy all day, just like with colds and flu.
  • Dry mouth is one of the most common symptoms. The reason for dry mouth is that patients with a stuffy nose breathe through their mouth.
  • A feeling of weakness throughout the body may be observed due to nasal flesh enlargement. Since the nose is an organ that facilitates breathing and supports a healthy breathing pattern, breathing through the mouth rather than the nose can cause the body to tire. Breathing through the mouth is not as healthy as breathing through the nose.
  • Nostrils that appear due to enlarged nasal flesh can lead to problems such as insomnia and snoring during sleep.

What Causes Nasal Flesh Growth?

The causes of nasal flesh growth can be listed as follows;

  • Breathing polluted and humid air every day is considered one of the main causes of nasal flesh growth.
  • Nasal flesh growth is more common in people with multiple allergies and a sensitive constitution. Especially in people who are allergic to pollen, fungi, mold and dust, nasal flesh enlargement may occur in the long term as a result of frequent allergic reactions.
  • Since smoking is one of the main factors affecting the respiratory tract, people who smoke may experience nasal flesh enlargement. However, spending too much time indoors with heavy smoking during the day can also cause nasal flesh to enlarge as it leads to breathing air polluted by cigarettes.
  • Chronic diseases affecting the nose can cause nasal flesh enlargement. Sinusitis is one of the main conditions that cause nasal flesh enlargement.
  • Inflammations in the nose can lead to nasal flesh enlargement.
  • Nasal bone curvature is a common problem and can lead to nasal flesh growth. Curvature of the nasal bone may be a congenital problem or may have occurred as a result of accidents and trauma. In both cases, it is recommended to treat it so that it does not cause other problems in the nose.

How to Reduce Nasal Flesh?

Surgery or different treatment methods can be applied to reduce the nasal flesh . Although patients often hesitate from surgery, nasal flesh surgery is not a difficult and dangerous surgery. The use of nasal sprays is one of the methods used to reduce the nasal flesh. The use of these sprays, which have a limited duration of use of 5 to 6 days, is not a definitive solution for nasal flesh.

Nasal flesh reduction operations can be listed as follows;

  • Ultrasonicaspiration operation is an operation that allows the tissues in the nose to shrink through laser light and ultrasonic sound waves. During the operation, a small hole is made in the lower part of the nose and ultrasonic sound waves directly contact the nasal flesh. In this way, while the useful tissues in the nose remain in place, harmful tissues are destroyed without the need for any incision.
  • Radiofrequency operation is an operation performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia. It is an operation that allows the nasal flesh to shrink as a result of exposure to radiofrequency energy and has a high success rate. Ultrasonicaspiration is a practical and effortless procedure.

How is Concha Hypertrophy Surgery Performed?

Concha hypertrophy surgery is a preferred method for serious sizes. While ultrasonicaspiration or radiofrequency procedures are preferred for nasal flesh that is not too large, nasal flesh that occurs due to nasal curvature, grows too much over time and seriously disturbs the patient can be removed by surgery. The difference of the surgery from other procedures is that it may take longer compared to other procedures due to the opening of the nose and the incision process. Although the success rate of other procedures is high, surgery can be shown as the most definitive treatment procedure for the treatment of nasal flesh .

Surgery methods can be listed as follows;

  • Cauterization method is one of the most preferred procedures to eliminate nasal flesh. During this process, the burnt meat can be completely destroyed by heat.
  • If the cause of nasal flesh formation is nasal curvature, rhinoplasty surgery is preferred in addition to nasal flesh surgery. Two doctors are involved in this type of surgery. While one doctor removes the nasal flesh, the other doctor corrects the curvature of the nose.
  • If the reduction of the nasal flesh is sufficient, the operation can be terminated by reducing the nasal effect with simple procedures. If the nasal flesh is enlarged enough to disturb the patient even though the nasal flesh is reduced, the nasal flesh bone can be pushed to the side and broken.
  • Too large nasal flesh is removed from the nose with the incision method during surgery and thus completely eliminated.

What happens if nasal flesh is not treated?

If the nasal flesh is left untreated, it can lead to problems such as difficulty breathing, pain in the facial area, dryness in the mouth and throat, chronic fatigue and reluctance. Abnormally large nasal septum does not only cause breathing difficulties. It can also cause problems such as pressure in the face, a feeling of fullness in the nose and pain in the face. Since these factors negatively affect the person’s life, it is important to treat the nasal flesh. Since untreated nasal meat also causes chronic headaches, patients may frequently go to the hospital thinking that they have migraine disease and may feel the need to use painkillers.

What Can Be Done to Alleviate the Symptoms of Concha Hypertrophy?

The following can be done to alleviate the symptoms of turbinate hypertrophy ;

  • You can use painkillers for headaches and facial pain. It is important to note that medicines should be used under the supervision of a doctor, not randomly.
  • Frequent mouth breathing can cause dry throat and mouth, so you can use throat sprays, drink herbal teas to soften your throat and gargle with salt water.
  • You should stay away from areas with humid and polluted air, do not smoke and avoid entering indoor environments where smoking is used.

Is Concha Hypertrophy Treated Without Surgery?

Concha hypertrophy cannot be treated without surgery . It is a condition that requires surgical operation. Small nasal flesh may be the exception and can be reduced with certain procedures. However, abnormally large nasal flesh will not shrink on its own and requires surgical operation. The treatment of nasal flesh is done by the doctor planning the treatment by deciding which treatment procedure is appropriate for the patient.
